The wind in your hair, the asphalt beneath your tires, the twisting road, and unending possibilities; there are many reasons to love a good drive. Whether you are trying to get the baby to sleep or just wanting to drive with a destination to nowhere, in particular, you should know the best scenic drives in the area. So let’s take a look at a few unforgettable routes in Palo Alto, California.
Skyline Boulevard – Route 35
Skyline Boulevard, or California State Route 35, is a grand adventure just waiting for you to start the engine. The twisting, winding road spans the north end of Kings mountains all the way to Santa Cruz. The entire trail is roughly 54 miles long and filled with breathtaking views of redwood trees and outstanding mountainsides. On your drive, you will likely find yourself at 3,000 feet of elevation near Sanborn Skyline Park, the peak of this specific route.
This roadway is just far enough from the city that you can get lost in the silence of the dense trees and rough-hewn mountain stone. The highway is mostly two lanes and has several places to stop and enjoy nature with a short walk or even a full day hike. You will not want to miss the vista points for some fantastic photo opportunities, like Windy Hill Summit. If you are getting out of the car, definitely make sure to stop in the Redwood Forest and see the Methuselah Tree, an 1860-year-old, 1400-foot tall, 14-foot wide natural monument.
This drive is a favorite among motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts. If you make it to the end of the line and need a bite to eat, check out Alice's Restaurant for a good burger, a cold drink, and some live music.
Highway 1
Highway 1 is a gorgeous drive in its entirety, but it is also a long drive at well over 600 miles. So, let's focus on the stunning stretch from Pacifica to Santa Cruz. This drive highlights the duality of the nature of California. On one side, you will watch the waves rolling in and out along the coastline, and on the other side, you will see the mountains rising next to you. You do not even have to drive the entire 61-mile stint to enjoy its majesty.

Throughout your journey, you will find many places to stop and take in the scenery. If you are starting at Pacifica, take a moment to check out the 110-acre park, Mori Point. Visit the ever-present sentinel of Pigeon Point Light Station, a 115-foot 150-year-old lighthouse. Whether you are just there for the drive or want to visit any of the more than 19 open-access beaches, this drive is spectacular.
Along the way, check out these delightful spots for some tasty food and new experiences. Grab the delicious French favorite, crepes, at Mavericks Creperie. Visit Pie Ranch for farm-fresh produce, tasty pies, and wonderful canned foods. Make the day a whole adventure and take a riding lesson at Sæstaðir Icelandic Horses. There is so much to see and do on Highway 1 you will want to drive through again and again.
Pescadero Creek Road
You'll find yourself holding tight to the wheel as you roam through Pescadero Creek Road. The road takes you into the dense forest as you head towards Sam McDonald Park. The park is a redwood forest for hiking, but there is a road that leads through it. While driving, if you decide to get out and hike a bit, you can make your way over to the open ridge section and see the Pacific Ocean.
Even in the comfort of your car, you'll see the redwood trees towering high above you. The forests are an incredible sight to behold, and the twisting road that leads you through them is exhilarating. There are forests all over the world, but none of them will be one of the most magical drives you can ever take.
You may find yourself inspired to go for a walk through the trees. Sam McDonald Park has a plethora of opportunities for that. Big Tree Trail is a short walk for you to stretch your legs and get to see those incredible redwoods up close. Take the Heritage Grove trail or the Forest Loop trail if you want a longer hike but beware of the steep inclines.
Palomares Road
The road does not have as many twists and turns, but you will find yourself winding through the serene country club back road. Cruise past vineyards and wineries and breathe deep on this easy route. It is a quiet journey where you can just let the road carry you forward without a thought or care. Surrounded by mountains and greenery, you will feel like you are traveling in Tolkien's middle earth itself.
When you come to the end of Palomares Road, you can easily turn around and do it all again as the road is only 8 miles long. Who knows what animals you may encounter a second trip around or what you could have missed from the other direction. If nothing else, the winery is back the way you came.
The road is calling your name; all you need to do is turn the ignition and follow it.
